Born into a musical family, DJ Mike Márquez inherited his eclectic taste from his father’s extensive record collection. At the age of six, spinning two copies of Lime’s 1985 hit “Unexpected Lovers” on his father’s belt-drive turntables, Mike discovered his true calling: DJing. Captivated by the driving rhythm and infectious energy of the track, he was drawn to the world of dance music, exploring Latin freestyle before embracing the burgeoning house music scene of late 1980s New York City. Livestreaming Pioneer
When the world went into lockdown in 2020, DJ Mike Márquez saw an opportunity to unite people through the power of dance music, taking to the streets of his native New York City and revolutionizing the medium with his innovative outdoor livestreams. For over 74 consecutive weeks, every Sunday morning and Monday evening, regardless of weather—including famously braving not one, but two snowstorms, one on a Monday evening and another the following Sunday morning—Mike’s Sunrise Sessions and Sunset Sessions transformed iconic New York City locations into global dance floors. Mike livestreamed his DJ sets from locations ranging from the South Street Seaport and East River Park to beneath the FDR Drive overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge, as well as underneath the neon Pepsi-Cola sign in Long Island City, providing a vital connection for a locked-down world, offering a sense of community and a unique perspective on the city.
His dedication and ingenuity caught the attention of the music world, earning him recognition from DJ equipment giant Pioneer DJ, who featured him on their global social media platforms. This success led to an endorsement from Logitech, featuring Mike in their ad campaign for the Mevo Start livestreaming camera, which allowed him to broadcast in stunning 1080p HD from even more challenging locations, including a frigid Coney Island in February, underground on the F train Delancey Street platform, atop the Brooklyn Bridge, and in the heart of Times Square to name a few.
But Mike’s efforts extended beyond entertainment. He used his platform for good, hosting a four-hour set that raised over $1,100 for The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center of New York City in memory of his late dog Buster, and later supporting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with a sunset stream from atop his roof. With just a controller, a camera, and his unwavering passion, Mike Márquez pioneered a new era of DJ livestreaming, inspiring countless others to take their music to the streets and connect with audiences worldwide. Partnering with DJX on their inaugural nXt program, he mentored students aged 8-19, equipping them with the skills to command their own dance floors, culminating in a memorable performance on Atlantic City’s iconic Steel Pier. Beyond nXt, Mike has generously shared his expertise with the NYC Department of Education, introducing countless children to the joy of DJing through inspiring classes and even providing behind-the-scenes access to professional gigs, such as inviting students to observe his setup for a 5th-grade prom he volunteered to DJ at a Brooklyn public school. Through these diverse opportunities, Mike inspires a lifelong love of music and empowers young people to express themselves creatively.
